Mr. Gary Jerome Bates, 79, of Rocky Face, passed away Saturday, August 22, 2026 at his residence.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Juanita Barnard Bates and James Creed Bates.

Gary is survived by his wife, Catherine (Kay) Bates; daughter, April Rich of Dalton, GA.; son, Jeremy Bates (Autumn) of Ringgold, GA.; sister, Marlene Stanley (Larry) of Franklin, TN.; step-children, Daniel Springer of Rocky Face, GA, and Carrie Freeman (Mac) of Kingsport, TN.; grandsons, Oliver and Emmett Bates, Cal and Creed Rich, and Tessa Freeman.

Gary dedicated his life to the people he loved most—his family. He loved his wife dearly, and anyone who knew him knew just how proud he was of his children and grandchildren. He was always there to lend a helping hand, offer encouragement, and patiently share the wisdom and life lessons he had gained along the way.

Gary’s love of boating and cars was passed down to the younger generations, creating memories and wisdom that will continue to live on through his family. He was never afraid of hard work. After earning his bachelor’s degree from West Georgia College, Gary devoted more than 30 years to his career before entering a well-deserved retirement.

He embraced retirement by spending time with his wife, traveling to the beach and mountains, and pursuing one of his greatest passions—building his dream car. These were the things that brought him joy, but above all, it was the time spent with his family that meant the most.

To know Gary was to love him, and to have Gary in your corner was a true gift. His kindness, wisdom, hardworking spirit, and unwavering love for his family will be deeply missed and forever cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, from 12:00 PM until 2:00 PM at the Rocky Face Chapel of Julian Peeples Funeral Home.
