Alice McDaris
Sloan
Sep 5, 1941 — Jun 25, 2026
Alice McDaris Sloan, age 84, passed away peacefully on June 25, 2026
in the comfort of her home, surrounded by her loving family. Born on September 5, 1941, Mrs. Sloan lived a full life, enjoying being with family, friends, cooking, gardening and a good dessert. It has been said that she had a gift for bringing things to life, whether growing flowers and vegetables or with laughter and joy in the presence of others.
Mrs. Sloan was preceded in death by her parents, James Oscar McDaris and Nora Carroll McDaris, brothers, Bobby McDaris and Clyde McDaris and a sister, Lois Ezell. She was also preceded in death by her first born infant grandson, David Souther.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 67 years, William Glenn Sloan, who cared for and cherished her until her final breath. She is also survived by her daughters, Rhonda Sloan Souther (Mark) of Dalton, Georgia, Donna Sloan Pound (Steve) of Savannah, Georgia. Grandchildren, The Honorable George Jason Souther (Molly), William Jess Souther (Amanda), Preston Thomas Pound (Elizabeth), Riley Alice Pound Akridge (Konnor) and Amelia Sloan Pound. Great grandchildren, Finley George Souther, Nora Lorraine Souther and Annie Jones Souther.
She is also survived by her ever present and caring sister and brother in law Joan and Carlie Ponder, sister in law, Marlyne Lindsey (JE) and brother in law, Wayne Sloan (Dot), nieces and nephews. She is also survived by very special, loyal friends who are like family, Nancy and Bobby Howell.
Mrs. Sloan was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church for most of her adult life, forming a close circle of lifelong friends with members of the YAT class and the craft group, The Keenagers. In 2019, she and her husband joined Dalton First United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Alice, as she was often referred to, had the honor and privilege to help raise generations of Dalton children while working at WEE Learn Center at First Baptist Church and later at First United Methodist Church Christian Learning Center. She was a community volunteer, serving with Meals on Wheels, Hospital Volunteer, an election poll worker, Miracle League and Ross Woods.
Mrs. Sloan was lovingly cared for by angels on earth, Angie McTaggart, Penny Jackson, Cierra Chaney and Becky Berry. The family would like to express their gratitude for their loving hands and hearts during her last years on earth.
Mrs. Sloan will be remembered by her husband as a loving wife, her daughters as a caring mother, her grandchildren will remember their Ma as one of their greatest cheerleaders, being at all events they were involved in, baseball, ballet, track, cross country, and any other activity. She did not want to miss a minute of their lives. Her great grandchildren will remember her as a gentle and kind Great Ma who always had a lollipop or ice cream to share.
Funeral Services will be held in the chapel of Love Funeral Home on Saturday, June 27, 2026.
The family will receive visitors from 1:00- 2:00 with the service immediately following with Pastor Chuck Harmon officiating and longtime friend Mr. Jackie Weaver providing special music.
As Mrs. Sloan loved flowers almost as much as she enjoyed sweets, flowers will be accepted, or donations may be made to First United Methodist Church Christian Learning Center.
Our hearts are saddened but one of her favorite sermons was based on the phrase “joy comes in the morning” from Psalms 30:5. We will cling to that promise in the days ahead.
